A new and bold chapter in Philippine theatre opens up this August as Spike Theatre launchesaward-winning playwright Rachel Bonds’s Jonah.
Founded by emerging theatre practitioners Xavier Tiam, Edith Garcia, Katrina Gamba, and Chris Abecia, Spike Theatre is a new production house dedicated to creating accessible theatre experiences with equitable opportunities while fostering a “Brave Space” in their practice.
Making its debut with Jonah by Rachel Bonds, Spike Theatre presents a gripping and deeply haunting one-act memory play about trust, intimacy, and survival. Jonah follows the story of Ana as she navigates the fractured landscape of her trauma and relationships. As past and present blur, the play explores themes of human connection, confrontation, and the difficult process of healing.
Written by award-winning playwright Rachel Bonds, Jonah earned the 2024 Laurents/Hatcher Prize. Bonds’ work has been produced and developed by major American theatre companies, including Roundabout Theatre Company, Ars Nova, Manhattan Theatre Club, Atlantic Theater Company, and Williamstown Theatre Festival, and she is also the recipient of the Weissberger Award, Sky Cooper Prize, and Heideman Award.
Bringing Bond’s acclaimed play to the Philippine Stage is director Edith Garcia, a freelance actress for musical theater, straight plays, and film. She recently completed her Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Her first professional stage appearance was LADY CAPULET in Everyman Presents’ Romeo x Juliet, directed by Carl Cariño. She made her directorial debut with Dustin Celestino’s “Fermata,” produced by BenildeTheater Arts’ Wideye Collective. Jonah marks Edith’s second directorial work as she continues her journey as an emerging theatre director.
Jonah runs on August 29 & 30 and September 5 & 6 at Dance Royalties Studio, Pavilion Mall, Mandaluyong.
Tickets are priced at PHP 1,000 (Regular) and PHP 1,500 (Patron). Patron tickets guarantee priority seating for an enhanced viewing experience and contribute to the continued growth of independent Philippine theatre and new work by emerging artists.
With its first production, Spike Theatre introduces itself as a company committed to bold artistic vision and fearless storytelling. Jonah marks the beginning of a practice rooted in creating theatre that is, above all, Bold. Brave. Boundless.
